The Civil War Sesquicentennial and Civil Rights 50th Anniversary bring about Camp Nelson and Archaeological District’s designation as a National Historic Landmark.

Further intensive excavations by the University of Kentucky on sites of Camp Nelson refugee cottages and huts reveals rim lock fragments and keys, suggesting that residents actively worked to secure their possessions, while ink bottle and slate board fragments point to the presence of literate residents, or those involved in learning at the camp’s schoolhouse. Professor Stephen McBride argues that these finds “may reflect the transition from slavery to freedom at Camp Nelson.”

Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park is officially opened.

Camp Nelson is added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park is established by the Jessamine County Fiscal Court, using local, State, and federal funds to preserve land, construct a visitor center and replica barracks, reconstruct a fort, and create a network of walking trails.

The Colored Soldiers Monument at Green Hill Cemetery is one of 61 different monuments related to Kentucky’s Civil War history to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Nicholasville Confederate Memorial is another.

Archaeological excavations of the former Home for Colored Refugees at Camp Nelson takes place, led by University of Kentucky.
