The monument was designed by the McNeel Marble Company of Marietta, Georgia. The completed monument is a set of four Doric columns supporting a canopy made of granite, with a marble statue of Robert E. Lee on top. The monument includes a porcelain drinking fountain that was installed below the canopy and was in operation until the early 1950s as a ‘whites-only’ fountain.
