On December 13th, Federal troops made repeated assaults against Confederate positions behind the stone walls along the Sunken Road at Marye’s Heights. In five hours an estimated 6,300 Union soldiers lay dead or wounded on the battlefield. As darkness approached, a light snow fell and the temperatures dropped to near zero. All through the frigid gloom, injured men cried in agony” “Help,” “Water,” “Somebody, please help.” For one Union Commander that night was forever etched in his memory. “My ears were filled with the cries and groans of the wounded, and the ghastly faces of the dead almost made a wall around me.” By the afternoon of December 14th, Sergeant Richard R. Kirkland of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry could no longer bear those mournful cries. Shortly after mid-day, Kirkland secured permission from his commander to take water to those in need. Filling as many canteens as he could carry, Kirkland hurtled the stone wall and ran to the aid of wounded Union soldiers. Shots rang out from the Federal lines. Only when the purpose of the Confederate’s errand became readily apparent, did the Union commander shout down the line: “Don’t shoot that man, he’s too brave to die.” Then, for ninety minutes the battlefield was quiet. Both sides observed a solemn truce as the nineteen-year-old sergeant turned Good Samaritan tenderly ministered to enemy wounded soldiers in what was most assuredly a “moment of mercy.” Soldiers in blue and soldiers in gray repeated this incident many times throughout the Civil War. This Moment of Mercy sculpture pays homage to them and the uniquely American spirit of aiding those in need. Companies C, D & F were raised in Somerset County. The regiment took part in over twenty engagements from the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1862 to the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House in 1865. During two and one-half years of service the 142nd P.V.I. lost 140 killed and mortally wounded, 430 wounded, 158 captured or missing and 81 died of disease, a total loss of 809. On the afternoon of July 1, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Colonel Cummins was ordered to lead his regiment in a counterattack against an overwhelming force of North Carolinians on the east slope of McPherson's Ridge. Though the colonel's horse was shot from under him, he leapt to his feet and pointing his sword to the regimental colors shouted, “Rally round the flag!” Moments later he fell mortally wounded. The 142nd P.V.I. stubbornly withdrew to the grounds of the Lutheran Seminary before retiring to Cemetery Hill south of Gettysburg where they rallied among tombstones of the town cemetery. As part of the Union First Corps, the regiment's heroic actions at Gettysburg that day impeded the momentum of overwhelming Confederate attacks until additional Union troops arrived on the field. During the three day battle of Gettysburg, the regiment lost 31 killed and mortally wounded, 110 wounded and 70 captured or missing, a total loss of 211. This monument is presented to the county and dedicated to the memory of the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry by descendants and friends. May we always remember their sacrifice for freedom. Born in Philadelphia in 1792, Uriah Phillips Levy was a fifth generation American. According to family stories, he left for sea at ten years old, returning to celebrate his bar mitzvah here at Congregation Mikveh Israel in 1805. He served with distinction in the U.S. Navy in the War of 1812, and became the first Jewish U.S. Navy Commodore, a rank equivalent to Admiral today. During his fifty-year naval career, Levy was court martialed six times and killed a man in a duel - all incidents related to rampant anti-Semitism. He was dismissed twice from the U.S. Navy, but was reinstated by Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler. He went on to command the Mediterranean Fleet and was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to head the Navy Court Martial Board during the Civil War. Levy played a key role in helping to repeal the flogging of sailors, making the U.S. Navy the first military organization in the world to abolish physical punishment. Levy greatly admired President Thomas Jefferson and the Bill of Rights he crafted, which safeguarded religious liberties for all Americans. In 1832, he commissioned a statue of Jefferson, which sits in the U.S. Capitol today. In 1834, Levy purchased Monticello, Jefferson's home near Charlottesville, Virginia, which he repaired, restored and preserved for future generations. The World War II destroyer escort USS Levy (DE-162) was named in his honor, as were the Uriah P. Levy Jewish Chapel at the Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia, and the Commodore Uriah P. Levy Center and Jewish Chapel at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Levy is buried at Beth Olom Cemetery in Queens, New York. Union forces occupied grounds south of here, toward cemetery hill and Confederate forces held positions to the north in many of the town’s buildings and homes. Unity Park now stands in the space occupied by the opposing armies, and symbolizes the return of unity and peace to our once warring and divided country. Unity Park features symbolism from the America Civil War. The statue has been sculpted and case in Pennsylvania, representing the north. The pedestal of the statue was mined from a quarry in Georgia and crafted in the south. There are two paths from the north and two from the south that unite in the center. The park’s benches feature customer ends fabricated in the north; while the seat material was manufactured in the south. The park features the flags of the Union and Confederacy with the current flag of the United States in the middle. The boxwood shrubs and flags represent the thirty-six states that composed the Union and the end of the Civil War. The statue is dedicated to all musicians who served America. The drummer boy was chosen to raise awareness to the many underage boys who enlisted during out nations’ Civil War. During this time, the minimum age for a musician to join the army was twelve; and thousands of young boys served both the North and the South during the conflict. Unity Park’s goal is to Event Markercate visitors on the role of music during the Civil War. Music was used by both armies as a vital form of communication and organization.
