The soldier wears a uniform and cap. The cape of his overcoat is thrown over his proper right shoulder. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground in front of him. The sculpture stands atop a multi-tiered pedestal. A small cannon barrel protrudes through an opening on each side of the tiered pedestal. The pedestal rests on a square vaulted structure containing a room for war relics. Bronze relief panels are mounted to three sides of the structure's facade; a bronze door with relief is located on the west side of the structure. The relief panel on the east side depicts two wounded soldiers, a father and son, comforting each other. The panel on the south side depicts a capless soldier crouched behind a barricade, rifle at the ready. The relief panel on the north side depicts a woman gazing upon a recent battlefield filled with remnants of the conflict including a broken wheel, a broken sword, and a bugle. The door on the west side of the structure has a relief depicting a soldier on sentry duty. Killed in the Western Campaign. Lack of interest from distant families allowed deterioration of the wood grave markers and heavy overgrowth. In 1927, the Jeffersonville Council determined “Better the sound of children’s footsteps at play than the silent stride of the nearly forgotten Great Spirit Army here at rest”.
