Reno was a 1846 graduate of West Point Military and thrice decorated hero of 1846 war with Mexico. He was promoted to Brigadier General at the start of the Civil War. Reno is credited with saving the nation's capitol at the 2nd Battle of Bull Run prior to being promoted to Major General in July 1862. Reno was killed in action on Sept. 14, 1862 at the Battle of South Mountain, Maryland. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, D.C." He enlisted in the Federal Army in 1862 and served under Col. John D. Allen in Company K. of the 16th Regiment. He participated in the Battles of Pine Ridge and Springfield. Several years after the war he migrated to what is now Monkey Island, then Needmore, Indian Territory. He deeded 2 acres for a ""Grave Yard"" and 1 acre for a School from his Cherokee Land Allotment. Two graves were on the site at the time. He later died and was buried here on March 19, 1904. Everett Lee, Grandson of Louis Rolston Jr., and numerous other members of the Rolston-Lee families also rest here. The cemetery has been maintained since inception by volunteers." Blunt, the Union commander at Honey Springs, reported: ""The First Kansas (Colored) particularly distinguished itself. They fought like veterans, and preserved their line unbroken throughout the engagement. Their coolness and bravery I have never seen surpassed; they were in the hottest of the fight and opposed to Texas troops twice their number, whom they completely routed."" Consisting largely of escaped slaves from Arkansas and Missouri, on January 13, 1863, the 1st Kansas became the fourth Black regiment to officially enter Federal service. Later redesignated as the 79th U.S. Colored Infantry, this command fought with conspicuous bravery in Missouri, Indian Territory, Kansas, and Arkansas.
