Title

The Robert E. Lee Monument (Meadowbrook, Virginia)

Description

The first and largest monument created for Monument Avenue, the Robert E. Lee Monument was a focal point in Richmond, Virginia. It was composed of two distinct parts: a prominent base, designed by Paul Pujol, and a large statue designed by the renowned French sculptor Antonin MerciƩ, that featured Lee atop his horse, Traveller, looking out proudly over the streets. The Monument has long been a source of controversy and was finally dismantled and removed on 8 September 2021.
