Ereceted in honor of Vice Admiral Stephen Clegg Rown U.S. Navy; Born in Ireland Dec. 25th 1808; Died in Washington D.C. Mar. 31st 1890 Received Special Vote of Thanks of Congress for Distinguished Services Feb. 7th 1863; Vice Admiral S.C. Rown U.S. Navy Appointed Midshipman, Feb. 1dt 1826 while a resident of Piqua. Participated in the Seminole War and in the Mexican War on the Pacific Coast at Monterrery, Sand Diego and Los Angeles. In the Civil War at Acquia Creek, Fort Hatteras, Roanoke Island, Elizabeth City, New Berne in command of the New Ironsides during the siege of Charleston.
