He was known as the "Boy Colonel of the Confederacy' and the youngest of the colonel in the Confederate Army at the time of his death. It is engraved with the profile of Will West Long who was a descendant of a Cherokee Confederate Veteran. It was made to "[stress] the need of southern history being perpetuated and eulogized the Indian soldiers of the Confederacy'. It consists of a tall white granite shaft with a Confederate Common Soldier standing with his rifle at his waist and pointing forward. In the Civil War, Chowan County contributed men to the Albemarle Artillery, composed of enlisted men from North Carolina's eastern counties. The monument originally stood in the lawn in front of the Old Colonial Courthouse on East King Street. Although just steps from the waterfront, the monument was placed with the soldier's back to the bay as he faced north. Today the monument sits on South Broad Street in a median between the lanes of the street, south of Water Street. It's bronze material reflects the common story that the Light Artillery of the company was made up of was crafted out of bronze bells, and smelted into weapons.
