Dedicated in the midst of war in 1863, the monument stands as the state's first Civil War monument. The monument is located outside of the Kensington Congregational Church and was designed by parish member Nelson Augustus Moore. Both parish and community members raised the funds for the obelisk's conception. A Civil War cannon was placed near the monument to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 1913. In 2013, the monument was recognized as the oldest permanent Civil War Monument in the US by the National Register of Historic Places.
