He was known as the "Boy Colonel of the Confederacy' and the youngest of the colonel in the Confederate Army at the time of his death. His control of the 26th Regiment of NC troops during the battle led to the death or wounding of 588 men, the highest casualty rate for a single regiment in a single day of battle on either side of the conflict. The monument is located in the historic Oakwood Cemetery in North Carolina's capital, Raleigh.
