K. Davis was a soldier, left for war. The flag was present at the Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, but was soon thought to have been lost amidst the chaos of the Civil War. The memorial is comprised of an obelisk, constructed by Quincy Marble Works and transported to Nantucket by schooner, atop a granite millstone from the local Old North Grist Mill.
