A ‘Soldier’s Memorial’ erected in 1876 serves as a tribute to the Union as does a statue of Abraham Lincoln nearby. Perhaps most prominently, however, is the Confederate Mound located in the southwest corner of the cemetery. The Confederate Mound marks the final resting place of approximately 4,000 unnamed Confederate soldiers. These soldiers had been held captive at Camp Douglas. Their bodies were originally buried at City Cemetery but were reinterred at Oak Woods Cemetery after reported health concerns from the nearby neighbourhood regarding the mass grave’s proximity to their largest water source.
