On May 22, 1861, upon his return to Grafton from a rally in Pruntytown, West Virginia, Private Brown was killed at the Fetterman Bridge by members of a Confederate militia that would later become a company of the 25th Virginia Infantry Regiment. Based on this account, Thornsbury Bailey Brown is widely considered to be the first Union soldier to be killed by a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War. Title A name given to the resource Battle of Corrick's Ford Monument (Parsons, West Virginia) Type The nature or genre of the resource Site Description An account of the resource This monument was erected and unveiled in 1938 in front of the Tucker County courthouse in commemoration of the Battle of Corrick’s Ford, which took place on July 13, 1861. Following their defeat at the Battle of Rich Mountain (Randolph County, West V.A.), 4,000 Confederate troops retreated into Tucker County and were attacked by 6,000 Union troops on Cheat River, near the town of Parsons where the courthouse is located. This was the last of a series of engagements between the troops of Union Brigadier General Thomas A. Morris and Confederate Brigadier General Robert S. Garnett, whose names are inscribed on the plaque. The monument commemorates both Union and Confederate soldiers who fought at Corrick's Ford. On the upper panel of the monument, above the plaque, is an alloy bas-relief of two crossed sabers (edge down), which could be in reference to the standard symbol for U.S. Cavalry during the Civil War that was worn on the front of the dress, forage cap or kepi. Since this official insignia was sported by cavalrymen with the edges of its sabers up, the artist could have chosen to point the blades downwards as a symbol of mourning. This is not the only existing Civil War monument with ‘reversed’ official symbols for different branches of service (i.e. crossed muskets with muzzles down for infantry or crossed cannons with barrels down for artillery). Civil War 1861 – 1865 “The memory of those men who went out in their country’s service, whether to the North or to the South, whether returned and buried here, or fell on the field and was laid to rest elsewhere, deserves to be kept.” —William H. Bishop In the Fall of 1862, Roane County saw its first significant battle of the Civil War. Colonel J. C. Rathbone, with four companies of the 11th West Virginia Union Infantry, arrived to protect the town of Spencer. General Albert G. Jenkins, with a company of 500 Confederates, advanced from Weston. Colonel Rathbone surrendered the town to General Jenkins, who took possession “in the name of Jefferson Davis and the Southern Confederacy.” Jenkins and his army headed west after surrender. Rathbone and his men were paroled, promising not to bear arms against the South for thirty days. As soon as Jenkins left, Captain Sympson and his troops of the 11th Regiment, who had escaped towards Reedy, returned to recapture Spencer for the Union. The State Guard fought the first and last battle in Roane County. While several were wounded, only two persons were killed in the Battle of Spencer. Sanford Boon of the State Guards was killed while high up in the cupola of the court house and Sergeant William Pool of Rathbone’s men was shot while superintending throwing up breast works.
