"James Buchanan Eads Born in Lawrenceburg, became a famous engineer who built the Eads Bridge arched over the Mississippi at St. Louis and jetties at New Orleans. During the Civil War President Lincoln commissioned him to design and build ironclad gunboats for the Union forces. He is the only Hoosier and the only engineer in the Hall of Fame in New York.

An account of the resource
The monument is a granite cuboid marker with bronze tablets on each side, listing the names of 184 Confederate prisoners that are buried at Philadelphia National Cemetery, but whose specific graves cannot be identified. It was opened at a ceremony on the anniversary of Robert E. Lee's death, with music, poetry, a thirty-gun salute, having about a thousand people in attendance. The monument is accompanied by a sign explaining the history of this monument.

An account of the resource
After the First Battle of Manassas, fought July 21, 1861, Confederate casualties were evacuated by train, and Brandy Station became a hospital site. While we cannot be certain, there is a possibility that these troopers could have recovered in the Graffiti House and it could have been in the aftermath of the battle when these men scrawled their names upon the walls. The house has been recently renovated, and is in sound condition. It is also the headquarters of the Brandy Station Foundation.

Dedicated to the memory of James Birdseye McPherson Born at Clyde, Ohio, Nov. 14, 1828, Graduated from West Point 1853; Appointed Brevet Second Lieutenant of Engineer 1853; Appointed Captian Aug. 6, 1861; Served in the field at the opening of the Civil War Promoted to Brigadier General May 15, 1862; He took an important part in the siege and capture of VIcksburg, July 4, 1863 and was appointed Brigadier General of the U.S. Army Aug. 1, 1863; made commander of the Army of Tennessee March 12, 1864. He was active in the Georgia Campaign, Commanded in the engagement around Atlant, and was killed while making a reconnoissance on July 22, 1864. General Mc Pherson was the highest ranking officer killed in action during the Civil War.

When our country sent out the call to arms for the preservation of the Union Ohio sent more than three hundre thousand of her sons … They had the faith that right makes might and in that faith dared to do their duty...This memorial is erected in grateful tribute to their devotion and self-sacrifice. Men win glory in the fierce heat of conflict but the glory of Woman is more hardly won ... Upon her falls the burden of maintaining the family and the home; nursing the sick and wounded and restoring the courage of the broken. She endures the suspense of battle without its exaltation ... This memorial is erected in grateful tribute to the loyal women of 61-65 without whose help no victory- or lasting oeace- could ever have been won. 'Let us have peace."
