The group's official name was the JH Converse Post, dedicated to fallen soldier Joseph H. Converse. When local deacon Jabez H. Hayden sold the land to the GAR, he included a clause stating the land must be used as a soldier's memorial forever or turned over to the town's orthodox congregational church. This clause has facilitated the continued preservation and use of the building as a meeting hall for veterans today.
