The Crafts escaped enslavement in the United States, travelling to Britain to avoid recapture following the introduction of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. They travelled the country giving lectures, and in 1860 published a narrative of their escape, Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom. This plaque was erected in 1995.
