He was known as the "Boy Colonel of the Confederacy' and the youngest of the colonel in the Confederate Army at the time of his death. His control of the 26th Regiment of NC troops during the battle led to the death or wounding of 588 men, the highest casualty rate for a single regiment in a single day of battle on either side of the conflict. The monument is located in the historic Oakwood Cemetery in North Carolina's capital, Raleigh. It is engraved with the profile of Will West Long who was a descendant of a Cherokee Confederate Veteran. The opening of the marker was attended by a troop of Boy Scouts, locals and several Native American tribes. It was made to "[stress] the need of southern history being perpetuated and eulogized the Indian soldiers of the Confederacy'. This was in response to the men who became part of companies A and B of the 6th NC Regiment, broadly made up of able-bodied Native American men, who served as scouts and home guards along the border with Tennessee. Dedicated by the Colorado Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, 2003." Below that dedication are two engraved Confederate flags; the border of the leftmost, a Confederate Battle Flag, is engraved with the words "Sons of Confederate Veterans 1896," and in the center of the flag on the right, a Confederate Navy Ensign, are the words "Colorado S.C.V.".
